In 2020, then COVID-19 took the world by storm, there was an increased need to work remotely. While things like e-mail, CRM and even shared company data already were already online and remotely accessible at all times, other business critical systems were less so. This is especially true for PABX systems, especially since their security practices are often obsolete, mostly due to their relative longevity in operation when compared to other technologies.

To make matters more complicated, enterprise solutions may not be connected to the client network at all, as they run on their own separate networks and use use separate internet connection for increased reliability and security.

The solution was to set up a OpenVPN server bridging the two networks, such that staff handsets could travel away from the premises, connect securely back to the home network and into their PABX network transparent to the user. Bonus points was the use of raspberry pi’s on the handset end to ensure current, high grade encryption for the network stream.
